Over the last 20 years or so, there has been a significant emphasis on the manufacture and development of geosynthetic textiles. It is true that still now this particular industry is considered to be rather new. However, even in this short lifespan it has already come up with products that are now being applied in a diverse array of industries such as geotechnical, embankment management, transportation, mining, and hydraulic industries. In many cases it has been seen that one such textile is capable of solving a number of problems being faced by civil engineers at the same time.

The first example

The first name that needs to be taken to demonstrate the application of geosynthetic textile is the usage of a prefabricated pocket-style vertical drain that is made from non-woven filter jackets that are specialized as PVD (prefabricated vertical drain) filter materials. The main aim behind developing the product was to bring down the time that was needed for construction. It did so by discharging fast the water in the ground thus speeding up the process of soil consolidation. Overall, it has proven effective when it comes to reducing time taken in construction and speeding up the process of soft ground consolidation.

This includes the likes of road construction and the development of building sites.

The second example

The second example of how geosynthetic textiles can prove to be helpful to problems faced in the domain of civil engineering is a polyester-woven geotextile mat. It is created using high-tenacity polyester filament that happens to be rather dense as well. This particular kind of geosynthetic textile is used to reinforce embankments and soft ground. You can also use this to separate layers of soft ground from sand, secure a safe path of travel for heavy equipment across soft ground, and preventing the uneven settlement of soft ground.

The third way

The third example in this case would be the fences and stilt curtains that are created using these textiles. Stilt curtains are installed in water for preventing the spread of contaminants that are dangerous to the environment. These contaminants often originate from riverside and coastal construction projects. The thing with these curtains and fences is that you can also use them in cases of open water leaks and spills. They have also proven to be effective in cases where you need to prevent the spread of sand and fine soil that has been brought about by construction.
